Geographical indications: aligning EU rules with changes to the provisions under the Lisbon Agreement
This procedure aligns EU rules on geographical indications with changes to the Lisbon Agreement, amending Regulation (EU) 2019/1753 following amendments adopted by the Assembly of the Lisbon Union on 14 July 2025 to the Common Regulations and the Geneva Act. Amendments note that around 80% of GI producers are small and medium-sized enterprises and would tailor procedures to their administrative capacities. They distinguish types of modification to the name, product type or geographical area versus quality or reputation, govern submission of requests to the International Bureau via the WIPO eLisbon platform, address online fraud and domain-name alerts, propose a WIPO trust fund financed from the Union budget, and set two-yearly monitoring, referencing Regulations (EU) 2024/1143 and 2023/2411.
