Summary

This dossier is the Renewable Energy Directive. Under the ordinary legislative procedure, Parliament and the Council of the EU decide together and the result is binding EU law. Seven committees, including Industry, Research and Energy and Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, worked on it under the subject of alternative and renewable energies. The tabled amendments revise biomass sustainability rules: applying a cascading (resource-waste hierarchy) principle to biomass use, adjusting installation thresholds for solid and woody biomass fuels, redefining protected forest, grassland and peatland areas, raising greenhouse gas saving percentages, and adding criteria on agricultural residues and low carbon fuels. It shares subjects such as alternative and renewable energies with related files including Promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources.
