Summary
A proposal amending the batteries directive on placing on the market portable batteries and accumulators containing cadmium for cordless power tools and button cells with low mercury content. The amendments revise the dates until which existing exemptions apply (variously 31 December 2013, 30 June 2014 or 31 December 2018), align definitions of 'placing on the market' and producer-registration requirements with related EU legislation, set rules for withdrawal of non-compliant stocks, and address battery removability by end-users.
